Celestia is a Layer-1 blockchain that aims to solve the data availability problem and provide a bedrock for other Layer-2 blockchains, so-called “sovereign rollups,” to flourish. Celestia’s main scientific contribution is the introduction of a lazy (or “dirty”) ledger in which transactions are written indiscriminately and sanitized afterwards, separating the classically intertwined consensus and execution layers. As they aim to store large amounts of data on-chain, they have also innovated in the area of efficient coding for data storage. We are working with Celestia's team to analyze different data availability attacks that occur in their model, whether an adversary is attempting to cause consensus issues or to spear-attack a particular victim. Our exploration pertains to designing protocols that enable large anonymity sets at the network layer, which allow for good availability guarantees to arise at the consensus layer.
